What a signpost is How to read this page

A watched question with a line drawn in advance

The threshold was written before the observation existed. That is what stops a state from being argued into place after the fact.

Four states, no probabilities

Observed, emerging, contested, not observed. These are qualitative readings against the threshold. No number is invented here, because an invented number would be the most quotable and least true thing on the page.

It stays alive between revisions

The update condition names what would move the state. A signpost that has stayed quiet is information too, and is published rather than hidden.

Abrupt Earth-system Tipping Cascade

Qualitative signpost review · no probability assigned

Bounded observation

WMO reports 2025 ocean heat content at the highest level in a 66-year record, glacier mass balance among the five most negative years, record-low Arctic annual maximum sea ice and global mean sea level near its record. Multiple monitored subsystems are stressed, but no abrupt causal tipping cascade is established.

Trigger threshold

Move to observed only after independent observing systems document an abrupt, persistent regime shift in at least two linked Earth subsystems with evidence of causal propagation, not simultaneous adverse trends alone.

Counter-indicator

Annual records and long-run trends can occur without crossing a tipping threshold; WMO reports indicators, not attribution of a cascade.

Update criterion

Review each WMO annual state report plus peer-reviewed attribution/tipping assessments; retain emerging unless discontinuity, persistence and cross-system linkage are all demonstrated.
