What a signpost is How to read this page

A watched question with a line drawn in advance

The threshold was written before the observation existed. That is what stops a state from being argued into place after the fact.

Four states, no probabilities

Observed, emerging, contested, not observed. These are qualitative readings against the threshold. No number is invented here, because an invented number would be the most quotable and least true thing on the page.

It stays alive between revisions

The update condition names what would move the state. A signpost that has stayed quiet is information too, and is published rather than hidden.

Bounded observation

The A-Lab primary study integrated ab-initio databases, literature-derived machine learning, active learning and robotics, and synthesized 36 of 57 targeted inorganic compounds during 17 days of continuous operation. It demonstrates a convergent AI-robotics-materials design-to-test loop, but on one bespoke platform and without evidence of replicated specialty-product manufacturing at scale.

Trigger threshold

Move to observed when independent laboratories replicate cross-domain closed-loop results and at least one resulting specialty product advances into repeatable pilot production with quality and cost metrics.

Counter-indicator

The study is a single-platform research demonstration with manually loaded consumables; target synthesis does not establish manufacturability, unit economics or cross-domain diffusion.

Update criterion

Track independent replications, uptime, yield, cost, technology transfer and products reaching pilot manufacturing; downgrade if results remain bespoke or fail reproduction.
