MWITA-EBRO-2026-008 · Evidence A · P1
Raising the advertised monthly wage from MXN 3,750 to MXN 5,000 increased applications by 26% and the conversion of selected candidates into accepted offers by 35%, while attracting applicants with stronger measured ability and no observed reduction in public-service motivation.
What this does not establish
The result does not establish cost-effectiveness after payroll costs, long-run job performance or retention, and does not imply every employer can buy applicant quality; the roles were temporary public-service positions in marginalized Mexican municipalities.
Counterevidence & uncertainty
Unlike the Ugandan signaling study, higher wage information did not measurably crowd out prosocial applicants, showing that pay effects depend on what the wage signals about an already-described role.
