MWITA-EBRO-2026-012 · Evidence A · P1
Negative employment word-of-mouth reduced applicant attraction most strongly for an unknown employer; established positive or negative employer-brand knowledge attenuated—but did not eliminate—the negative signal.
What this does not establish
The experimental endpoint is stated attraction among potential applicants, not submitted applications, acceptances, hires, performance or retention; a familiar negative brand remained less attractive in level even though new negative WOM moved it less.
Counterevidence & uncertainty
Both positive and negative familiarity buffered incremental negative WOM, so attenuation is partly prior knowledge and signal consistency—not proof that a favorable reputation immunizes an employer.
