MWITA-ALGP-2026-006 · Evidence A · P1
In an incentivized online experiment, participants manipulated disclosed attributes more successfully when those attributes appeared directly related to the priced lottery, while less obvious cross-context profiling produced less optimal privacy choices and lower payoffs.
What this does not establish
A small-stakes lottery and disclosed experimental mechanism do not measure behavior under opaque commercial profiling or repeated real purchases.
Counterevidence & uncertainty
Participants bought privacy more often and made more optimal privacy choices when the profiling link was obvious; complexity reduced effective self-protection.
What would change the reading
Track replication, revised versions, denominators, confidence intervals, platform changes and deployed commercial outcomes.
