MWITA-LOC-2026-003 · Evidence A · P1
IsiXhosa dubbing improved multiple ad-diagnostic outcomes relative to English for two household-product television ads, but involvement was not consistently improved and the reported sales-lift measure was a survey diagnostic rather than observed sales.
What this does not establish
Awareness, enjoyment, persuasion, impact and buying intention are distinct self-reported outcomes; the 'short-term sales lift' diagnostic is not transaction-level sales. Two ads, one language community and two provinces do not identify effects for Zulu, other African languages, digital clicks, purchases, revenue or retention.
Counterevidence & uncertainty
Large enjoyment, awareness and bleach-persuasion differences coexist with a null overall involvement result and only +1% persuasion for the dishwashing ad; direct translation, accent choice and overly formal 'deep Xhosa' were also identified as possible harms.
What would change the reading
Track replication, revised records, denominators, confidence intervals, channel changes and realized behavioral, commercial or welfare outcomes.
